5 Myths About the Flu and the Flu Vaccine

Similar to COVID-19, influenza was a disease that shook up the world in the early 1900s. After a short period of living in fear, a vaccine was created and eased many people’s minds. Fast forward to 2020 and there is no longer much fear when it comes to the flu, seeing many people choose to not get the once begged for, flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is one that is always changing with a new one being released every single year. This factor, among many others, makes some skeptical about the vaccine and its benefits. However, with any myth comes the facts behind it that disprove it, which is where our staff at Walking Urgent Care, Inc. comes in. We try out best to make sure all of our patients know the facts because unfortunately, many people choose to not protect themselves with this vaccine because of these myths. If you have any questions about the flu vaccine the following myth busters should provide some insight. Keep reading to learn some facts about the flu and flu vaccine.

Myth 1: The Flu Vaccine Gives You the Flu

Many people shy away from the mention of the flu vaccine at their annual doctor’s appointments because they believe this vaccine will make them sick. It’s quite ironic how this is a myth considering the vaccine is given to prevent people from getting critically sick from the flu. Nonetheless, this myth is a real concern for many. The vaccine works by having some of the flu viruses in it; however, the virus that is in the vaccine is an inactive version of it that cannot get you sick. You may feel a little off after getting the shot for a day or two, but you will not develop intense flu symptoms.

Myth 2: The Vaccine Does Not Work

We commonly hear people say that the vaccine did not work for them and that they still got the flu. It’s important to remember that the flu is constantly changing and that you need to get the shot every year to stay fully protected. There can also be more than one type of the virus at once during the calendar year that you could contract; however, having the vaccine will still protect you if you get sick and make the symptoms affect you significantly less. Getting the shot also helps protect those who are unable to get the shot, have a weak immune system and those who are elderly.

Myth 3: The Flu is Not Serious

The flu is not always life-threatening and can show up in someone as a weaker strain; regardless, this is not the case for everyone. There are plenty of people who end up in the hospital severely ill from the flu. There are also plenty who are not so lucky and even die from the common flu, adding up to be a large number of people at 650,000 people dying a year. In rare cases, even the healthiest of people can become very ill from the flu, leading to them having sinus, heart, and respiratory problems. This is why everyone needs to get the shot and build up herd immunity when it comes to this disease it isn’t always about you getting sick as much as it is about your grandparents getting sick.
