Any primary care physician will recommend women to undergo pap smear. If you are a woman, you might have heard about this term quite a lot. So, what is a pap smear and why is it important for women?
Pap Smear: A Screening Procedure
Pap smear, also known as a Pap test, is a screening procedure used to detect cervical cancer. This involves the collection of cells from the cervix and identifying changes in the cells which may indicate the development of cancer.
Frequency of Testing
Women aged 21 to 65 years are recommended to go through pap smear every 3 years. However, you may need to visit your Urgent Care Center in Coral Springs, Florida for a pap smear more frequently if you have the following risk factors:
- HIV infection
- Cervical cancer diagnosis
- Pap test that shows precancerous cells
- Weakened immune system
- Exposure to DES before birth
Preparing for Pap Test
Before urgent care services in Florida for a pap test, you have to prepare accordingly. Take note of the following:
- Do not schedule a pap test during your menstrual period.
- Do not use douching or vaginal medicines or creams at least two days prior to your scheduled pap test.
- Avoid intercourse, too.
What to Expect
A pap smear only takes a few minutes. You may have to be naked waist down or completely. Since the test involves the insertion of an instrument into the vagina, you may feel a certain pressure or sensation in the pelvic area. The test does not hurt, though. After the test, you can just go about your day normally.
Your doctor will let you know when you can expect the results of your pap smear. When the results are positive, no further test is needed. For negative results, your doctor may ask you to undergo other tests.
